Gulf Coast Cluster for Cellular and Molecular Biophysics
About
The Cellular and Molecular Biophysics (CMB) Cluster will build upon the prior consortia for Magnetic Resonance and Crystallography, but expand the spectrum of researchers to include additional approaches to the study of molecular biophysics, as well as cellular biophysics. The Cluster will bring together experimental, theoretical and cellular biophysicists to foster interactions between scientists with complimentary skills and knowledge, and promote productive collaborations with greater funding potential. Molecular biophysics is a broad area of research that includes studies on macromolecular structure, conformational dynamics, protein folding, protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions and kinetics. The spectrum of technologies used for these studies include (but may not be limited to) the structure-based experimental approaches of NMR, crystallography and EM, but also non-structure approaches such as single molecule FRET and computational/theoretical methodologies. Cell biophysics focuses on the physical principles underlying cell function. This would include EM tomography and super resolution microscopy, channel biophysics, biosensors to study signal transduction and signaling cascades, membrane biophysics, intracellular single molecule imaging, intracellular protein folding, as well as various fluorescence and other approaches to monitor intracellular transport, protein-protein interactions and dynamic conformational changes.
