Dr. Elizabeth Salisbury's research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying heterotopic ossification to not only prevent this abnormal bone formation in soft tissues, but also potentially capitalize on these mechanisms for bone engineering applications. This work has uncovered contributions by the peripheral nervous system to this process, both through activating an inflammatory response and producing progenitor cells.
