My major research goals are to define the epidemiology, pathogenesis, genetic risk factors, clinical manifestations, treatment, control and prevention of multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO) causing bloodstream infections in immunocompromised cancer patients. Currently my research is focusing in the genomic characteristics of E. coli strains causing infective myositis, the genomic profile of multi-drug resistant bacterial microorganisms causing bloodstream infections, the safety and efficacy of novel therapy for Clostridium difficile infection in cancer patients, the role of the GI and vaginal microbiome in cancer patients, and the development of novel diagnostic devices for rapid and accurate diagnosis of infectious problems. Finally, I am the current Faculty liaison between the Department of Infectious Diseases and MDACC Global Academic Programs and Sister Institutions Network, with collaborative academic activities and research projects with sister institutions in Brazil, Chile, Japan, Lebanon and Peru.
