Dr. Schein's major projects have ranged from studying the interaction of interferons with ribonucleases to designing drugs against microbial pathogens. Her group at the UTMB identified novel inhibitors of anthrax edema factor, using computational compound selection and docking. She also developed and validated a novel method for extracting data from large biological sequence collections, based on determining physicochemical property (PCP) consensus sequences. The method has proved very useful for vaccine design, for example against Dengue virus, and to identify common properties of allergenic proteins. All of these tools are now in use in her current projects.
