Dr. Philip Lupo is a genetic epidemiologist with a focus on inherited genetic susceptibility to childhood cancer and birth defects. He is currently serving as the Vice Chair of the Children's Oncology Group (COG) Epidemiology Committee and Chair of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network Data Committee. He has a particular interest in the use of novel epidemiologic study designs and methods in determining the etiologies of pediatric and perinatal conditions. The ultimate goal of his research is to discover factors that can be used in new prevention efforts and targeted interventions to limit the adverse consequences of adverse pediatric and perinatal outcomes. Lupo is currently working closely with investigators in COG to develop a research program in the epidemiology of rhabdomyosarcoma and am the principal investigator (PI) of the COG-supported Genetics of Embryonal and Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma Study (GEARS). He is also an active collaborator with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-supported National Birth Defects Prevention Study and as part of a multidisciplinary team of experts assessing the intersection of childhood cancer and birth defects. As part of this, Lupo is the PI of the Genetic Overlap Between Anomalies and Cancer in Kids (GOBACK) Study, a multistate consortium evaluating the risk of cancer in children with birth defects. Another aspect of his research is understanding the molecular mechanisms of the short- and long-term consequences of treatment for childhood cancer (i.e., late effects). Related to these efforts, he co-directs the Long Term Survivor Research Program, serves on the COG Outcomes-Survivorship Committee, collaborates on several ongoing projects in the National Cancer Institute-funded Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS), and is PI of the St. Baldrick's Foundation-funded Reducing Ethnic Disparities in Acute Leukemia (REDIAL) Consortium. In 2018, Lupo was invited to be an associate editor for the journal, Birth Defects Research. Lupo conducts research on the intersection of birth defects and childhood cancer.
