Dr. Bayer is a renowned expert and key opinion leader in bacterial pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, animal models of infection, and therapeutic optimization as it relates to endovascular infections. His lab studies how the human body responds to infection and builds up resistance to antibiotics. His main area of focus is the expression of key virulence factors and genes which enhance the ability of Staphylococcus aureus to cause endovascular infections and resist antibiotics. Additionally, Dr. Bayer is investigating the mechanisms by which platelet peptides kill common blood stream pathogens, and the genetic mechanisms by which certain strains of bacteria develop resistance and cross-resistance to antibiotics. The ultimate goal of his research is to develop strategies to effectively circumvent pathogens as well as drug resistances.
