Dr. Hoover's research focuses on cancer prevention and health promotion, particularly tobacco cessation in underserved populations (low socioeconomic status [SES], racial/ethnic minority, low health literacy). She is also interested in understanding optimal ways of communicating about health risks within these populations. Key themes of her current work include: 1) SES and racial/ethnic disparities in tobacco use and cessation; 2) health literacy, tobacco use, and underlying mechanisms; 3) cancer risk communication; 4) the relation between mental illness and tobacco use; and 5) the role of social support in tobacco cessation and other health behavior change. Dr. Hoover's work has used innovative and emerging methodologies (e.g., ecological momentary assessment, mixed methods) and approaches for engaging with community organizations (e.g., community based participatory research).
