The major focus of Kaipparettu Lab is to understand the role of mitochondrial energy reprogramming and mitochondria-nuclear crosstalk in cancer. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cells. Altered mitochondrial function is one of the most consistent and well-established phenotypes in cancer. Thus, investigating the role of mitochondrial altered function or energy reprogramming in cancer is important in understanding the tumor initiation and progression. Our lab use transmitochondrial cybrid models (comparing different mitochondria under a common defined background) to discover mitochondria regulated cancer pathways. By applying multiple OMICs approaches in cybrids, cell lines and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models as well as using clinical data from cancer patients, we validate and confirm the discoveries from cybrid models. Overall our research pipeline help to understand the significance of mitochondrial reprogramming in the regulation of oncopathways and cancer progression. Other research areas of the lab include the nano scale material-based bioimaging and development of reliable materials for three-dimensional (3D) cell growth.
