I have published extensively on mechanisms to treat and prevent viral infections in this population. During my tenure at MD Anderson, I have established the clinical virology research program and assembled a research team that conducts phase II and phase III clinical trials for new antiviral drugs, desperately needed for our immunocompromised patients. I have led and completed a multi-institutional and international phase II trial for a new investigational antiviral drug, Letermovir, for prevention of CMV reactivation in allogeneic HCT recipients (New England Journal of Medicine, 2014). With strong collaboration with the Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Department (Drs. Champlin, Shpall, Rezvani and Hosing), I have successfully completed more than 11 clinical trials and several studies focusing on diagnosis and management of viral infections; data from which have been presented nationally and internationally with subsequent publications in high-impact journals.
