Research in my laboratory aims to understand the mechanisms responsible for microvascular dysfunction in inflammation. Microvascular dysfunction contributes to disease severity in critically ill patients (i.e., sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, reperfusion injury, etc), and there is a lack of specific treatment for these abnormalities. Over the past decade, my research has focused on the role of platelets in the microcirculation in inflammation, based on increasing evidence that platelets are key mediators of inflammation. We are studying the mechanisms linking inflammation and microvascular thrombosis in experimental sepsis and the role of platelets in the response to epithelial injury. I am also committed to promoting collaborative research and mentoring of early career investigators in the Center for Translational Research on Inflammatory Diseases (CTRID).
